It’s Good To Be Queen

Early this morning, I hoofed it over to the Memorial Coliseum to Photograph the Rose Queen Coronation for Oregon Live, and had lots of fun hanging behind the scenes with this year’s Rose Court as they prepared for the coronation.

The Rose Court is a time-honored tradition during the Rose Festival- Each year since the early 1900′s,¬† exemplary young women from each of Portland’s High School have competed to become the new Queen of the fictional land of Rosaria.
Winners  receive scholarship money, mentorship, clothing, and travel opportunities.

This year’s winner, the gorgeous Lamarra Haynes of Reynold’s high school, quite literally kicks ass – she’s a black belt!

The moment of the annoucement was a long time in the making, and proved to be very emotional for the girls.

Members of the Rose court rush in to congratulate an emotional Lamarra Haynes, the new "Queen of Rosaria."
